LILY & THE MAGICAL ORB
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
I was tasked to create a story from images of my choosing and then write a 5-6 page narrative telling a story based upon my chosen imagery. Design a photo book including your images and narrative. Send your final photo book PDF to a publisher and have it printed. In addition, create and design an interactive e-book to go along with your final printed book version.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
Narrative Strategies
At first, I wanted to create a very dramatic story with a couple who handles their relationship while the wife has cancer. However, this story has been told before, so I decided to create my own entirely different story by focusing on a fairy tale instead.
Target Audience
The target audience for this project is children between 1st and 5th grade. This book would be appropriate for any child, but the main character is a girl. Girls may be more likely to lean towards the book than boys.
Rough Narrative
Living in the land of magic, an ordinary fairy sprite named Lily becomes curious when she notices a dark figure rushing into the forest. The young sprite follows the figure. This decision would take Lily on a wild adventure that would help her magical powers become realized.

PROCESS WORK
Typography
For my typography, I decided to use Alex Brush regular for my titles to give the book a fairytale feel by utilizing script font. The font looks like calligraphy, which reminds me of old manuscript styles. For the body of my book, I decided to go with a neutral san-serif font called Neutra text. It is easy to read even at a smaller point size.

Color Palette
My color palette was inspired by the image that I used on the front cover of my book. I enjoyed the pale pinks, purples, blues, and oranges in the graphic. It made me feel like I was in a different world, a world of magic.

DIGITAL DRAFTS
Iteration 1
For my first concept, I wanted to depict a style that felt like the traditional fairytale storybook. I think that the black and white illustrations are a beautiful depiction of my narrative.

Iteration 2
It was very difficult for me to come to a design conclusion on this project because I enjoyed the black-and-white illustrations from my first concept. However, this did not fit with the assignment's requirements of using photography throughout the book. My second concept included the required photographs but the body text was very bulky and difficult to read.

Design Decisions
For my final concept, I decided to use two columns for my text so that it would be easier to read. In addition, I added some pops of color in the background to give the book a playful look and feel.
